Crazy North Americans.
Describing a 1994 vehicle as "a car that old" throws me as a New Zealander. That's barely a decade ago!
I'm in the Jolly Olde England now and I guess the cars are newer (and more European than Japanese) but back home, there are still plenty of cars from the 80's driving around perfectly happily! It's unusual to buy a car that's actually new new -- only rich people do that. Most cars are at least a couple of years old when they get into New Zealand (from Japan).

Actually, the majority of cars here are older as well, lol. Usually, if you're looking to buy a car here, as long as its older than 1990 its a bonus. The one that he just bought replaced a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass, so he at least upgraded 3 years.
Even my own 2003 car was preowned.
